Jersey Sheets: Myths, Facts, and Why They’re Different
When I started It-Fits, it wasn’t about picking a fabric, it was about bringing something to Australia that people here didn’t have. Jersey sheets were everywhere where I grew up, but they were almost unknown here. I quickly realised that many people had never even heard the term “jersey” in the bedding space before. And even those who still weren’t sure what it meant or why it was different. Instead, people were used to talking about things like thread count, linen, or microfiber, which only added to the confusion.
Woven vs. Jersey: Understanding the Difference
A common misunderstanding is thinking that jersey is a fibre, like cotton or polyester. In reality, jersey describes the fabric structure.
-
Structure: how the fabric is made — either woven (rigid crisscross) or knit/jersey (looped and stretchy).
-
Fibre: what the fabric is made from — cotton, polyester, bamboo, linen, or blends.
Most sheets in Australia are woven: whether cotton, polyester, linen, or microfibre, the fabric is rigid and doesn’t stretch. That’s why fitted sheets often pop off mattresses.
Jersey fabric, on the other hand, is knitted. It can be made from a range of fibres, including cotton, synthetics, or blends. At It-Fits, we choose 100% Australian cotton to knit our jersey, combining natural breathability with stretch and softness for a perfect fit that stays in place.

Knitted Jersey fabric’s structure

Traditional Woven fabric’s structure
| Knitted Jersey (It-Fits® fabric) | Woven Fabric (traditional sheets) |
|---|---|
| Made of endless threads that allow the fabric to move, stretch, and fit perfectly. | Made of straight, finite threads, so there’s no room for stretch or movement. |
| The interlooped threads let air flow freely, making the fabric naturally breathable. | The tightly aligned threads create a dense structure that limits airflow and breathability. |
| Wrinkle-resistant, so there’s no need for ironing. | Inelastic and wrinkle-prone, often requiring ironing. |
| Sleek, soft, and comfortable to the touch. | Rigid and sometimes itchy against the skin. |
The Myth That Jersey Sheets Feel Hot
One of the most common things I hear from customers is that jersey sheets must feel warm. It’s an understandable assumption, at first touch, they have that soft, peachy texture that reminds many people of flannelette.
But while they share that cosy feel, the fabric itself isn’t thick or heavy. Jersey cotton isn’t woven tightly. It’s a breathable knit that allows air to move freely through the surface. So you get the comfort of softness without the heat.
Another reason this myth exists is that many “jersey” sheets sold in Australia are made from microfibre blends. Microfibre is essentially plastic, and sleeping on plastic naturally feels hot and sweaty, even if the fabric is treated with so-called “cooling finishes.” Those coatings might feel cool at first touch, but they quickly lose their effect. Underneath, you’re still sleeping on a synthetic surface that traps heat and moisture.
In contrast, It-Fits sheets are made from 100% Australian cotton jersey, a natural fibre that’s moisture-absorbing and breathable. Cotton helps your body regulate temperature by wicking away excess moisture instead of trapping it, so you stay cool in summer and comfortably warm in winter.
Key benefits of jersey sheets:
-
Hug the corners and stay put, even on tricky mattresses
-
Stretch to fit thin, thick, and non-standard mattress shapes
-
Naturally breathable for year-round comfort
-
Soft, cosy feel from the first sleep
-
Effortless bed-making due to stretchy fabric
Understanding Pilling and Quality Differences
Another question that comes up often is whether jersey sheets pill over time. The truth is, pilling can happen with any fabric, but it’s far more likely when cheaper materials or blends are used.
Many low-cost “jersey” sheets on the market are made from mixed fibres, such as cotton blended with polyester or bamboo. These blends are more prone to pilling because each fibre behaves differently when washed or stretched. Over time, the stronger synthetic fibres push the softer natural fibres toward the surface, where they tangle and form those rough little balls.
That’s why we only use 100% Australian cotton jersey at It-Fits. Cotton’s longer, smoother fibres naturally resist breakage, which means far less pilling and a surface that stays soft and even.
Of course, even the best cotton can develop a few small pills over time, especially if washed with rough fabrics like towels or jeans. But with the right care, our sheets stay smooth and comfortable for years.

These are the perfect fitted sheets
This purchase is for my sixth It-Fits fitted sheet. They are an absolute joy! Easy to fit to the mattress and so soft and comfortable for summer AND winter use. Warm in winter, cool in summer - perfect. I have also bought three or four for my daughter and she and her family love them too. I literally wore out the very first one I purchased years ago as I would wash and dry it and put it straight back on the bed. I no longer use regular fitted sheets as they are uncomfortable and difficult to fit! I highly recommend these lovely sheets!

AWESOME
Fabulous, just what we needed for our new Split King Bed. We have been using your sheets for years, so it was great to find out we could get this size and just replace our bottom sheets, without having to buy whole king sets again. Wonderful fit and great fabric as always. I have not have 6 sets of these sheets and just love them :-) THANKYOU

One of my favourite reviews came from Molly T., who wrote that she’s “The best fitted sheet I have ever owned and at 78 yrs I've had a few. Highly recommend,”
That kind of feedback warms my heart every time. It’s a real reminder of why I started this in the first place.

FAQs About Bed Sheets & Jersey Fabric
Do jersey sheets always pill?
No. Pilling usually depends on fabric quality. Low-grade jersey blends (especially synthetics like microfiber) tend to pill more. Our 100% Australian cotton jersey is made to resist pilling naturally.
Are fitted sheets more prone to pilling?
Not necessarily – but if your sheet doesn’t fit well and shifts around, it can create more friction. That’s why It-Fits fitted sheets are made to stay snug on the mattress.
Why are jersey sheets becoming so popular in Australia?
Jersey sheets are growing in popularity across Australia thanks to their comfort and easy fit. Unlike woven sheets, which can feel stiff or pop off the corners, jersey sheets are knitted, allowing them to stretch and move with the mattress. They’re soft, breathable, and wrinkle-resistant, which makes them ideal for deep or adjustable beds. Cotton jersey, in particular, is praised for its year-round comfort: cool in summer and warm in winter. Many Australians describe the texture as similar to a favourite T-shirt: smooth, stretchy, and relaxed. With their combination of softness, fit, and easy care, jersey sheets have become a preferred choice for people who value both comfort and practicality.
Why are It-Fits® jersey sheets so highly rated with 1,000+ five-star reviews?
It-Fits® jersey sheets are consistently rated among Australia’s best because they solve everyday bedding frustrations. The 100% Australian cotton jersey fabric stretches easily, stays in place, and feels soft and breathable night after night. Customers often highlight how simple they are to wash, fold, and refit, even on adjustable or deep mattresses. The sheets remain smooth without needing to be ironed and resist pilling better than cheaper blends. Many reviews also mention how effortless bed-making becomes, thanks to the natural stretch and secure fit. With a focus on quality materials and practical design, It-Fits® has earned trust for offering long-lasting comfort that feels good and fits perfectly.
Are jersey sheets hot to sleep in?
Not all jersey sheets are warm to sleep in, it depends on the fabric. Synthetic versions, such as polyester or microfibre, tend to trap heat and moisture. Cotton jersey, however, is naturally breathable and moisture-absorbing, helping regulate body temperature for year-round comfort. It allows air to flow freely, keeping sleepers cool in summer and cosy in winter. The soft, T-shirt-like feel makes cotton jersey ideal for Australian climates, where temperatures can change from night to night. For the most comfortable experience, look for high-quality 100% cotton jersey sheets that balance softness and airflow.
What thread count are jersey sheets?
Jersey sheets don’t have a thread count because they’re knitted, not woven. Thread count measures the number of threads per inch in woven fabrics like percale or sateen, but jersey uses interlooping yarns that create a flexible, stretchy surface. The comfort of jersey sheets depends on fibre quality and knit density rather than thread numbers. Cotton jersey feels soft, breathable, and easy to care for, with a relaxed drape that’s perfect for fitted sheets. Many people prefer jersey to high-thread-count sheets because it’s less rigid and more comfortable for everyday use. When buying, focus on natural fibres like cotton and well-made knits for long-lasting quality.
What are jersey sheets made of?
The word “jersey” describes how the fabric is made, not what it’s made from. Jersey fabric is knitted, giving it flexibility and stretch. It can be made from various materials, including cotton, polyester, or bamboo. Cotton jersey is the most popular option because it’s soft, breathable, and gentle on the skin. It naturally regulates temperature and absorbs moisture, making it ideal for year-round use. Synthetic versions can feel warmer or less breathable. For lasting comfort and softness, many Australians prefer 100% cotton jersey bedding. Some brands, like It-Fits®, use locally grown Australian cotton to create well-fitting, breathable sheets that simplify bed-making.
Do jersey sheets come in cotton?
Yes, many jersey sheets are made from cotton, and they’re usually the best option for comfort and breathability. Cotton jersey combines the natural airflow of cotton with the softness and stretch of knit fabric. It feels cool, smooth, and lightweight, making it suitable for both warm and cool nights. Polyester and blended jersey sheets may feel less breathable and can trap heat. When shopping, look for 100% cotton jersey bedding with certifications such as OEKO-TEX®, which guarantees the fabric is free from harmful chemicals. Australian-made cotton jersey sheets, like those from It-Fits®, are known for their long-lasting quality and easy-care design.
Are jersey sheets prone to pilling?
Pilling can happen on any fabric, but high-quality cotton jersey sheets are naturally more resistant. It occurs when short or weak fibres break and form small balls on the fabric surface, something more common in synthetic or blended materials. Sheets made with long-staple cotton resist friction and remain smooth for longer. To prevent pilling, wash jersey sheets inside out, use mild detergent, and avoid mixing them with rough items like towels. Choosing natural fibres and caring for them properly helps keep the fabric soft and smooth over time. Many Australians report that quality cotton jersey bedding, such as that from It-Fits®, stays comfortable even after years of use.
Why do people prefer It-Fits® sheets over other brands?
People often choose It-Fits® for their focus on fit, comfort, and honest design. Their sheets are made from 100% Australian cotton jersey, a soft, stretchy fabric that adapts easily to adjustable, deep, or non-standard mattresses. They’re breathable, gentle on sensitive skin, and easy to wash and refit. It-Fits® bedding is also OEKO-TEX® certified, ensuring it’s free from harmful chemicals. Many Australians appreciate the brand’s transparency, consistent quality, and thoughtful details like colour-coded corners for easy bed-making. Rather than relying on short-term discounts, It-Fits® focuses on long-term comfort and durability, which has built lasting trust among its customers.
